Thyroid Hormone Serum Transport Proteins
نویسنده
چکیده
Thyroid hormone (TH) effects are dependent on the quantity of the hormone that reaches the tissues, hormone activation and the availability of unaltered TH receptors in the cells nuclei and cytoplasm. Since TH enters the cell unbound, the concentration of free rather than total hormone reflects more accurately the activity level of TH-dependent processes. Under normal conditions, changes in free hormone level are adjusted by appropriate stimulation or suppression of hormone secretion and disposal. Total TH concentration in serum is normally kept at a level proportional to the concentration of carrier proteins, and appropriate to maintain a constant free hormone level.

Potential mechanisms of thyroid disruption in humans: interaction of organochlorine compounds with thyroid receptor, transthyretin, and thyroid-binding globulin.
Organochlorine compounds, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), alter serum thyroid hormone levels in humans. Hydroxylated organochlorines have relatively high affinities for the serum transport protein transthyretin, but the ability of these compounds to interact with the human thyroid receptor is unknown. Using a baculovirus expression system in insect cells (Sf9 cells), we produced ...

Thyroid hormone metabolism and action are largely intracellular events that require transport of iodothyronines across the plasma membrane. It has been assumed for a long time that this occurs by passive diffusion, but it has become increasingly clear that cellular uptake and efflux of thyroid hormone is mediated by transporter proteins. Recently, several active and specific thyroid hormone tra...

Thyroid hormones (TH) are essential for normal development, differentiation growth and metabolism of every cell in the body. The pro-hormone thyroxine (T4) is synthesized by the thyroid follicles together with a small amount of the biologically active hormone triiodothyronine (T3), which derives mainly from tissue T4 deiodination. Approximately 0.03% of total T4 and 0.3% of total T3 in serum ar...

Thyroid hormone action is mediated by the thyroid hormone receptors TRα1 and TRβ. Defects in TRβ lead to RTH (resistance to thyroid hormone) β, a syndrome characterized by high levels of thyroid hormone and non-suppressed TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). However, a correct diagnosis of RTHβ patients is difficult as the clinical picture varies. A biochemical serum marker indicative of defects ...
متن کاملThe transport of thyroid hormones.
Hormones have to be transported from their sites of synthesis to their target organs. For lipophilic hormones, such as steroids and thyroid hormones, transport is accomplished by binding to specific serum proteins, in the case of thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) to thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) and prealbumin (PA). Normally about 70% of circulating T4 and 7540% of T3 is bound to TBG...
